Mr. Edge

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if he will seek to amend the Education Act 1944 so as to remove the compulsory act of worship in State schools;

(2) if he will seek to amend the Education Act 1944 so as to delete the requirement that children should receive compulsory religious instruction and to replace it by optional teaching of comparative religious and non-religious studies for life.

My right hon. Friend is not at present considering any amendment of the religious education provisions in the Education Act 1944.
