Mr. Freud

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will further consider allowing tax relief on the national insurance contributions of the self-employed; and what is the latest estimate of loss of revenue following such exemption.

Mr. Robert Sheldon,

pursuant to his reply [19th March 1975], gave the following information:

I have noted the hon. Gentleman's suggestion and will bear it in mind. Information on which to base a precise calculation is not available, but it is estimated that the full-year cost would be of the order of £80 million for Class II and IV contributions taken together, and of the order of £25 million for the Class IV contributions alone.
