HC Deb 15 December 1975 vol 902 cc431-2W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the total consumption and production of wine in the United Kingdom last year; which were the main countries that accounted for the balance of imports and in what proportion; and what proportion of United Kingdom production and consumption was attributable to Wales.

Mr. Bishop

55.6 million gallons of wine of fresh grapes were consumed in the United Kingdom in 1974. No official figures are available of production in the United Kingdom, but estimates put the 1974 harvest at about 10,000 gallons. The main countries from which the balance of imports were drawn were Spain, 31 per cent. of total United Kingdom supplies; France, 26 per cent.; Italy, 10 per cent.; and Cyprus, 10 per cent. Separate figures for production and consumption in Wales are not available.
