§ Mr. Fauldsasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will specify the sources of information on which he based his review of cases relating to the export under open general licence of British portraits of national importance valued at less than £4,000.
§ Mr. Hugh JenkinsMy review was of all cases considered by the Reviewing Committee on the export of works of art in the nine years ended 30th June 1975, where the declared value was less than twice the figure at which a specific export licence was required. Only two of these cases were of portraits, and in neither case did the Reviewing Committee decide that the portrait concerned was of national importance under the Waverley criteria. It is clear that items of lesser 349W value would have been even less likely to qualify under the Waverley criteria.
