HC Deb 02 December 1975 vol 901 c508W
22. Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of employees in employment in Wales at the most recent available date; and how this compares with the number five years and 10 years previously.

Mr. John Fraser

The provisional estimate of employees in employment in Wales for June 1975 was 986,000. The estimate for June 1970 was 968,000 and for June 1965 1,028,000.

35. Mr. Ioan Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what further action is proposed to deal with the problem of unemployment in Wales.

Mr. John Fraser

Wales is already benefiting from the measures announced on 24th September which were designed to mitigate the worst effects of unemployment throughout the country by helping up to 100,000 people obtain jobs which, otherwise, they would not have had. It is expected that the Welsh Development Agency and the National Enterprise Board will make a positive contribution to tackling unemployment and introducing new industrial investment.

Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many men were in employment in Wales in October 1965 and October 1975, respectively.

Mr. John Fraser

It is estimated that at June 1975, the most recent date for which figures are available, there were 611,000 male employees in employment in Wales. The corresponding figure for June 1965 was 708,000. The information is from a continuous series of employment estimates prepared on a consistent basis by adjusting for discontinuities which have occurred from time to time.
