HC Deb 26 November 1974 vol 882 cc104-5W
Mr. Higgins

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many different definitions of the London area exist for purposes of calculating entitlement to London allowances; and where the definitions are to be found.

Mr. Booth

Definitions of the London area for the purposes of London weighting are, in general, agreed between employers and unions in negotiations. We do not have sufficiently comprehensive information to give the number of definitions used in agreements. In its report on London weighting the Pay Board recommended an inner zone of four miles from Charing Cross and an outer zone based on the GLC boundary, but the board accepted the need for organisations to have areas which were administratively convenient and the Government have accepted that London weighting arrangements need to take into account the particular circumstances of individual groups.
