Mr. Tierney

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many industrial development certificates have been given and how many refused in the city of Birmingham for each year from 1964 to 1974, respectively.

The numbers of industrial development certificates approved and refused in the employment office areas which approximate to the city of Birmingham, for each year from 1964 to 1973 and the first nine months of 1974, are as follows:

Notethe exemption limit below which IDCs are not required for development in the City of Birmingham was lowered from 5000 sq. ft. to 1,000 sq. ft. in 1965, raised to 3,000 sq. ft. in 1966, to 5,000 sq. ft. in 1970 and to 15,000 sq. ft. in 1972. The limit was lowered to 10,000 sq. ft. on 1st September 1974.

The figures cover the Aston, Birmingham Exchange, Handsworth, Selly Oak, Small Heath and Washwood Heath Employment Offices.
