HC Deb 24 May 1974 vol 874 c366W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what correlation has been established, following the imposition of speed limits, between the speed of traffic and road accidents; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Mulley

Experience over many years is that where a speed limit results in lower speeds, accidents decrease. In practice the optimum road safety effect is achieved by setting speed limits at a realistic level.
