Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take action to eliminate the salary differentials that exist between teachers working in Scotland and those in England.

Mr. William Ross

The salary structure that has been established by negotiations in the Scottish Teachers Salaries Committee is different from the pattern in England. If the committee were to make any changes that reduced the differences some groups of Scottish teachers would gain but others would lose.
