HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 c320W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will examine the desirability of larger rear lights on all motor vehicles, following the experiments carried out by Dr. J. N. Lythgoe on fog visibility, details of which are in his possession.

Mr. Mulley

The matter is still being reviewed by my Department's Transport and Road Research Laboratory but on present evidence increasing the surface area of rear lamps appears to be a much less effective method of improving vehicle conspicuity in fog than high-intensity rear fog lamps, the use of which has recently been recommended.
