HC Deb 26 March 1974 vol 871 cc114-5W
Mr. John Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what provisions have been made for in-service training of non-qualified social workers to enable them to become qualified.

Mr. William Ross

Day release courses for unqualified social workers were started in Glasgow in 1972. Those who successfully complete phases 1 and 2 will be eligible to apply for selection for phase 3, a full-time one-year qualifying course. I understand that the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work is exploring the possibility of starting a phase 3 course in Glasgow later this year. Many non-qualified social workers are also seconded by their employers to other full-time courses in colleges or universities.

Mr. Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what provisions have been made to carry out the obligations laid on him by reason of Section 9 of the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968.

Mr. William Ross

I am sending my hon. Friend lists of the qualifying and in-service training courses which are being provided this year. My Department assists students attending these courses, voluntary organisations seconding their staff for training, and certain institutions which provide social work courses.
