HC Deb 25 March 1974 vol 871 c36W
Sir Frederic Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when work commenced on the Avon Bridge sector of the M5; what its present stage is; when the original completion date was expected to be; and when it will now be completed.

Mr. Carmichael

Work commenced on the Avonmouth Bridge, which is of box girder construction, on 1st September 1969. The steelwork is now approaching completion with the closure of the gap between the main boxes, but the steel plate battle deck has still to be constructed between boxes on the main span.

The original forecast completion date was 1st September 1972. The current forecast completion date is 1st September 1974, but we are striving for the earliest possible finish.
