HC Deb 28 June 1974 vol 875 c554W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will propose that the function clauses in the nationalisation Acts covering coal, electricity and gas be amended and extended to ensure that the corporations take into account and implement energy conservation proposals calculated to assist the national interest.

Mr. Varley

These industries are aware of the importance which the wide use of energy has for the economy, and take account of it in their activities. I intend that they will be closely involved in the work of the Advisory Council on Energy Conservation, whose setting up I announced on 25th June. I do not think that a change in the industries' statutory functions is necessary.
