HC Deb 10 June 1974 vol 874 c431W
Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action his Department took in relation to the expulsion of Mr. Ray Carr from Tanzania at 24 hours' notice; and if he will make a statement.

Miss Joan Lestor

As soon as it learned that Mr. Carr had been served with a prohibited immigration notice which required him to leave the country within 48 hours the High Commission in Dar-es-Salaam obtained confirmation from the Tanzanian authorities that it had been correctly issued. It also asked for the reasons for the notice, and a statement giving them was published soon after Mr. Carr's departure. As it is the right of every sovereign State to decide which non-citizens are to be permitted to live within its territory and to deport any of them in accordance with its own law, the High Commission could not challenge Mr. Carr's deportation.
