HC Deb 10 June 1974 vol 874 cc430-1W
Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will take steps to set up temporary offices to deal with entry applications to the United Kingdom in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Mr. Ennals

No. All immigration matters in Bangladesh will continue to be handled by the immigration section of the British High Commission in Dacca.

Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will take steps to set up temporary offices to deal with entry applications to the United Kingdom in Lahore, Lyallpur, Sahiwal and Mirpir, Pakistan.

Mr. Ennals

No. The British Embassy in Islamabad and the British Consulate-General in Karachi handle all immigration matters arising from applications made by residents from within their area of responsibility.

The British Consulate-General in Lahore handles applications from residents within its area of responsibility for entry certificates for temporary stay in the United Kingdom—that is, business men, students, visitors etc.—but refers all applications in respect of settlement, in the United Kingdom to the British Embassy in Islamabad.

Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will take steps to set up an urgent inquiry into the training of staff and the provision of interpreters for interviews at Dacca and Islamabad.

Mr. Ennals

No. Present training arrangements are considered adequate. Officers who require full training normally attend a six-week course at the Home Office and go on to London Airport for an eight-week attachment and practical training. Other officers attend shortened courses.

The British Embassy in Islamabad and the British High Commission in Dacca have a full staff of interpreters who are recruited locally.
