HC Deb 10 June 1974 vol 874 cc440-1W
Mr. MacFarlane

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the annual tonnage of freight currently conveyed on the inland waterways.

Mr. Mulley

About 5 million tons a year is carried on the inland waterways administered by the British Waterways Board. Various tonnages are carried, mostly by seagoing ships, on a number of lengths of river or canal controlled as part of port undertakings, notably some 16 million tons on the Manchester Ship Canal.
