HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc293-4W
Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what contribution to road safety and reduction in number of deaths the compulsory wearing of safety helmets by motor cyclists has achieved.

Mr. Mulley

The complications produced by the fuel crisis make it difficult to give a short answer. I will write to the hon. Gentleman.

Mr. Hastings

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in the light of experience and accident statistics since its introduction, he will reconsider the legislation making it compulsory for motor cyclists to wear crash helmets.

Mr. Mulley

The accident statistics that are available indicate a worthwhile saving in deaths and serious injuries following the introduction of the helmet wearing law, and accordingly I see no reason on these grounds to reconsider this legislation introduced by the last Government.
