asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what study he has given to the value of issuing identity cards as a means of assisting the police in prevention and detection of terrorism and other violent crimes; and if he will make a statement.

I keep this matter under close review. I do not think that the introduction of identity cards would be justified at the present time.
