HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 c222W
Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in the light of information already provided by the hon. Member for Essex, South-East, he is satisfied with the present security arrangements at the concentration of oil and chemical storage installations on Canvey Island.

Dr. Summerskill

The model code, issued by the Home Office, setting out the principles of construction for major petroleum installations recommends that such premises should be surrounded by an unclimbable fence or wall unless the area is otherwise controlled. Oil companies are well aware of the need for strict security measures at this time. I will write to the hon. Member about the arrangements at Canvey Island when inquiries into the points he has raised have been completed.
