Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many households in England and Wales had a total income of less than £20 per week in 1971, 1972 and 1973.

Estimates of numbers of households in England and Wales with a specified range of income are not available. From the Family Expenditure Survey it is estimated that the proportion of households in England and Wales with weekly household income less than £20 was 24 per cent. in 1971, 21 per cent. in 1972, and 19 per cent. in 1973. These estimates are subject to sampling variation.
