HC Deb 23 July 1974 vol 877 cc426-7W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT a table showing the mortality rate, the infant mortality rate, the pre-natal mortality rate per 1,000 total births and the maternal mortality rate per 1,000 births in the eight English standard regions.

Standard Region Crude death rate per 1,000 population Infant death rate (deaths of infants under 1 year of age per 1,000 live births) Perinatal death rate (still births and deaths of infants under 1 week of age per 1,000 total live and still births) Maternal death rate (principal and associated maternal causes of death, including abortion per 1,000 live and still births)
North 12.6 18 22 0.09
Yorkshire and Humberside 12.3 19 22 0.10
North West 12.8 19 24 0.07
East Midlands 11.2 16 20 0.10
West Midlands 10.9 19 24 0.08
East Anglia 11.6 14 18 0.20
South East 11.5 15 19 0.13
South West 12.7 15 19 0.17
The variations in the regional rates in the last column are a reflection of the very small numbers of maternal deaths and little significance should be read into them.
