asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) when the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents for Golborne, Wigan, concluded its work and disbanded;

(2) when the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents for Haydock, Merseyside, concluded its work and disbanded;

(3) when the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents for Newton le Willows, Merseyside, concluded its work and disbanded;

(4) when the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents of Warrington Rural District, Warrington, concluded its work and disbanded;

(5) when the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents for Irlam, Salford, concluded its work and disbanded;

(6) what are the names of the members of the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents for Golborne, Wigan;

(7) who were the members of the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents for Haydock, Merseyside;

(8) who were the members of the rent scrutiny board considering fair rents for Newton Le Willows, Merseyside;

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment from what source were the expenses, claimed by all members of rent scrutiny boards in England and Wales paid.

Expenditure on all rent assessment panel work in England is met from my Department's Central Administration Vote and in Wales from the equivalent Vote of my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.

(3) what was the total amount of expenses claimed by the members of the rent scrutiny board which considered fair rents for Golborne, Wigan, under (a) attendance allowance, (b) subsistence allowance and (c) travelling allowance;

(4) what was the total amount of expenses claimed by the members of the rent scrutiny board which considered fair rents for Irlam, Salford, under (a) attendance allowance, (b) subsistence allowance, and (c) travelling allowance;

I regret that details of claims made over a period by members of the rent assessment panels for various aspects of their work could only be extracted from the records at disproportionate cost.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what daily remuneration members of rent scrutiny boards are entitled to claim when on official duty assessing fair rents under (a) loss of earnings, (b) attendance allowance, (c) subsistence allowance and (d) car allowance.

Mr. Kaufman

The daily fee payable throughout the country to members of rent assessment panels from which rent scrutiny board members are drawn is £27 for chairmen, £25 for lawyer and valuer members and £15 for lay members. Half-day fees are payable as appropriate. Travelling expenses and subsistence allowances are paid at appropriate Civil Service salary scale rates.
