Mr. Jopling

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much income tax and surtax is paid by a retired married man with no other dependants, on a State retirement pension, plus a pension derived from his employment of £2,000 per annum, compared with a similar man with a State pension plus an investment income of £2,000 per annum.

Assuming that the man receives the ordinary married retirement pension, the tax payable in each case at the rates proposed for 1974–75 is as follows:
