HC Deb 01 July 1974 vol 876 cc56-7W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales whether he accepts the projected shortfall of 132,000 male jobs and 84,000 female jobs in Wales by 1976 made by Professor Graham Rees in the Commission on the Constitution, Research Papers 8, "Survey of the Welsh Economy".

Mr. John Morris

Estimates of this type are liable to vary according to the assumptions, techniques and other factors involved and about which there is scope for differing views.

The latest figures available suggest that the rise in employment of both males and females is proceeding more rapidly than anticipated by Professor Rees, while the growth of the labour force is expected to be smaller.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will state the number of persons in Wales in each of the following socio-economic groups: (a) semi-skilled manual workers, (b) unskilled manual workers, (c) farmers without employees and (d) agricultural workers; if he will express these figures

(Males and Females)
Semi-skilled manual workers Unskilled manual workers Farmers without employees Agricultural workers
Number 188,380 105,230 29,280 19,090
As percentage of economically active 16.4 9.2 2.6 1.7
Percentage relative to Great Britain 110 114 375 103
