HC Deb 29 April 1974 vol 872 cc371-2W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what import levies or duties are now being imposed on lamb and beef imported into the United Kingdom from outside the EEC.

Mr. Peart

The current rates of duty imposed on lamb and beef imported into the United Kingdom from third countries, under the arrangements in the Treaty of Accession for transition to Community tariffs, are set out in S.I. 1845/73 and S.I. 608/74.

The levies on fresh, chilled and frozen beef imports from third countries vary weekly or monthly according to world market conditions. But, for a large proportion of these imports, the levies and duties are offset by accession and monetary compensatory amounts.

Mr. Jay

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what foodstuffs imported into the United Kingdom from outside the EEC are now subject to import levies or duties, and for what purpose.

Mr. Peart

The United Kingdom has begun to move towards the EEC rates of import levies and duties for most foodstuffs from third countries, in accordance with our obligations under the Treaty of Accession. In the present world food situation the incidence of levies is small. In many cases charges are reduced by the application of monetary compensatory amounts.
