Mr. Bray

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the total cost of all capital works and grants approved by his Department for the North-West Region for the three year period ended 30th September 1973 and the equivalent approvals for the period ended 30th September 1970.

The following table sets out the cost of capital works and grants approved under the legislation specified. It is confined to works and grants directly related to regional industrial development.

Notes:

The figure for regional development grants relates to payments by the Bootle regional development grant office most of which related to premises in the North-West Region.

Figures of investment grant payments are not available in the form requested. During the financial years 1967–68, 1968–69 and 1969–70, £207 million was paid in respect of capital expenditure on plant and machinery, computers and mining works in the North-West Region. £86.6 million was paid in 1970–71, but no regional analysis is available for later years.

During these periods the coverage of the assisted areas in the North West changed considerably.
