HC Deb 04 July 1973 vol 859 cc138-9W
Mr. Rost

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many incidents have taken place in each of the past five years in which prisoners have assaulted other prisoners.

Mr. Carlisle

I regret that the information is not available in the form requested.

The table below shows the number of assaults on other prisoners for which inmates of prisons and remand centres were punished under the Prison Rules in 1970, 1971 and 1972. The figures relate to England and Wales.

he has to order the release of a prisoner suffering from a serious medical condition which is liable to deteriorate if he is kept in prison.

Mr. Carlisle

Early release on medical grounds may be authorised by exercise of the Prerogative of mercy, if my right hon. Friend is satisfied that there are compelling reasons justifying remission of the remainder of the sentence. A prisoner's medical condition may also be a factor taken into account when release on parole under the Criminal Justice Act 1967 is considered.
