§ Mr. Neaveasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) whether he will make a statement on the future of White Horse Hill, Uffington, an historic monument in his care;
(2) what discussions have taken place since 1968 between his Department, Berkshire County Council and the landowner's agent concerning White Horse Hill, Uffington, an historic monument, in relation to his powers under the Countryside Act.
§ Mr. AmeryThere have been several exploratory discussions between the landowner's agent the Berkshire County Council and the Countryside Commission about possible changes in the arrangements under which the public can enjoy White Horse Hill, which is in my guardianship under the Ancient Monu-386W ments Acts. Among the aspects discussed have been traffic, which is primarily the responsibility of the county council, and the acceptability of the area as a country park. The public will continue to be admitted to the monument free of charge.
