HC Deb 24 May 1972 vol 837 cc386-7W
Mr. Ronald Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what arrangements are made for inspecting health conditions in the premises covered by his Department in the Palace of Westminster; and when they were last visited by a public health inspector to check on the conditions prevailing in those premises.

Mr. Eyre

Suitably qualified members of my staff carry out frequent health inspections at the Palace of Westminster as at other premises within my care. Prompt action is taken to implement recommendations resulting from such inspections.

Mr. Ronald Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what arrangements are made for inspecting working conditions in the Palace of Westminster; when it was last visited by the factory inspectorate; and what comments were made on safety and working conditions.

Mr. Amery

Inspections are carried out from time to time by officers of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment. The workshops were last fully inspected in November, 1970, and the offices, etc., in December, 1969. No criticisms were made of the conditions in the workshops. Conditions in the offices, etc., were found to be satisfactory except in two respects and action was taken to deal with them.

Mr. Ronald Brown

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied that the working conditions given to manual grades employed on duties in the Palace of Westminster are in accord with those prescribed by the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act and the Factories Acts; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eyre

I have no reason to think otherwise, but if the hon. Member has any particular points in mind I will gladly consider them.
