asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement about the shooting incidents in Londonderry since Friday 12th May, 1972 to midnight on Saturday, 13th May, 1972.

During the 48 hours up to midnight Saturday, 13th May, 1972, there were 32 shooting incidents in Londonderry. These included two periods of intense shooting directed at the police station and Army post at Rosemount in the early hours of 13th May. In a separate incident on the evening of 13th May one terrorist was killed. During the period in question there were no other civilian casualties and no Army casualties.

Mr. McMaster

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland at what time shooting commenced in the Ballymurphy district of Belfast on Saturday, 13th May; how long it continued; how many shots were fired at the troops; when the Army sent sufficient soldiers in to take control of the area; what searches of premises in the area were conducted; and how many Republican gunmen and terrorists were arrested and weapons recovered.

The shooting lasted from 5.35 p.m. till 11.0 p.m. on Saturday, 13th May; an unknown number of shots were fired at troops in 17 incidents. Troops were already on duty at Army posts in the area and more were deployed on the following evening at 8.30 p.m.; two houses and a school in the Bally murphy district were searched but no arrests were made or weapons recovered.
