HC Deb 06 July 1972 vol 840 cc188-9W
33. Mr. Stratton Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what further discussions he has had for ending the rent and rates strike.

Mr. Channon

I would refer my hon. Friend to what my right hon. Friend said in the House on 29th June.—[Vol. 839, c. 1685–91.]

Mr. Stratton Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the total debt due to the rent and rates strike for 1971–72 which it is intended to recoup from ratepayers generally in 1972–73 by addition to the general rate; and how much additional burden this will represent per £ valuation for ratepayers in Belfast, Londonderry, Strabane and Newry, respectively.

Mr. Channon

It is not the intention to impose upon ratepayers as a whole additional rates to make good the amounts withheld in the civil disobedience campaign.
