Mr. Loughlin

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what were the numbers of persons estimated to be employed under the lump system for each year since 1966 to the nearest convenient date.

Mr. Channon

There are no reliable estimates of the numbers of persons employed under the lump system in 1966 or in the years since then.

water undertaking of the Aldeburgh Borough Council and £15,000 for the water undertaking of the Leiston-Cum-Sizewell Urban District Council. The West Hampshire Water Company paid £10,000 plus the amount of outstanding loans and the value of stores, plant and equipment for part of the water undertaking of the Lymington Borough Council. The price to be paid by the Essex Water Company for the water undertaking of the Chelmsford Borough Council was not specified in the order authorising the transfer but was left to be agreed between the parties. The amount of the settlement reached is understood to be £1,264,562.

Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the consents given by him since June, 1970 for acquisition by private water companies of water supply undertakings owned by local authorities, stating in each case the purchase price or terms agreed between the parties.
