HC Deb 01 August 1972 vol 842 c67W
57. Mr. Bagier

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what reply he has given to the request from the Town Clerk of Sunderland that he receive a deputation to discuss the present unemployment figures in Sunderland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dudley Smith

My right hon. Friend's reply referred to the Government's awareness of Sunderland's unemployment problems from earlier meetings and correspondence between Ministers and local interests, and to his view that another meeting was unlikely to be fruitful. He made clear, however, that the Government would do everything possible to see that the people of Sunderland get the job opportunities they require.
