Mr. Conlan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what was the total unemployed on Tyneside at the latest available date; what percentage of the total working population of the area this represents; and what were the comparable figures for 1969 and 1970;

(2) what was the total unemployed in Gateshead at the latest available date; what percentage of the total working population of the area this represents; and what were the comparable figures for 1969 and 1970;

(3) what was the number of males unemployed on Tyneside at the latest available date; what percentage of the male working populaton of the area this represents; and what were the comparable figures for 1969 and 1970;

The rates of unemployment are the total numbers registered as unemployed expressed as percentages of mid-year estimates of the numbers of employees, employed and unemployed. They can be calculated for the whole of the Tyneside travel-to-work area, which includes Gateshead, but not separately for its constituent parts.
