Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the average wage in Scotland and Great Britain, respectively, at the last date for which statistics are available.

Mr. Bryan

In October, 1970, the latest date for which information is available, the average weekly earnings of men manual workers, 21 years and over, covered by the Department's regular enquiry were £27.04 in Scotland and £28.13 in Great Britain.

Mr. McBride

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will state, to the latest convenient date, the average wage in Wales, and the national average wage, respectively.

In industries covered by the regular earnings enquiry, the average weekly earnings of full-time manual men age 21 and over were £27.93 in Wales and £28.05 in the United Kingdom in October. 1970.

(4) what was the number of males unemployed in Gateshead at the latest available date; what percentage of the male working population of the area this represents; and what were the comparable figures for 1969 and 1970.
