Mr. Conlan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of males unemployed in the North-East of England at the last available date; what percentage of the male working population of the area this represents; and what were the comparable figures for 1969 and 1970.

North-East England has been taken as the Northern Region except Cumberland and Westmorland. The rates of unemployment are the numbers of males registered as unemployed expressed as percentages of mid-year estimates of the numbers of male employees, employed and unemployed.
