HC Deb 16 March 1971 vol 813 c274W
60. Mr. Mayhew

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what action he is taking to ensure the adequate provision by local authorities of community services for the mentally disordered.

Sir K. Joseph

As announced in the House on 11th November, the Government are planning to make available over the next four years an extra £40 million for improved hospital and local authority services for the mentally ill and another extra £40 million for similar improvements for the mentally handicapped.

I have recently addressed special meetings of the County Councils Association and the Association of Municipal Corporations at which I have drawn special attention to the need to develop community services for the mentally disordered.—[Vol. 806, c. 391–8.]
