HC Deb 16 March 1971 vol 813 cc273-4W
59. Mr. Mayhew

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many wards in psychiatric hospitals are specifically designed for adolescents: and how many such wards he estimates are needed.

Sir K. Joseph

395 beds in 20 hospitals are specifically allocated for mentally ill adolescents, and a further 29 such units providing over 500 more beds are planned. The size of unit varies according to local circumstance and need is usually expressed in terms of bed numbers rather than numbers of units or wards. Hospital authorities were advised in 1964 to plan to provide 20–25 beds per million population.
