HC Deb 10 March 1971 vol 813 cc132-3W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will state the reasons for women being considered as unsuitable for employment in his Department as a Government Butler and Foreign Service Allowance Inspector and Assistant; and whether he will review these posts so as to allow women to undertake such duties.

Mr. David Howell

The post of a Government Butler is by definition a man's job. The post of Foreign Service Allowance Inspector and Assistant have always been filled by men although the Department would always be prepared to consider women who were suitably qualified.

Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will now review the list of posts in the Civil Service from which women are at present excluded; and if he will ensure there is no discrimination.

Mr. David Howell

The Civil Service Department is currently reviewing all aspects of women's employment in the non-industrial Civil Service. The reasons for excluding women from certain posts are included in the review.
