§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is
48Wto be replaced by 1978; and what will be the average annual capital cost of doing this.
§ Mr. van StraubenzeeThere are about 170 19th century primary schools in Cornwall of which about 60 are likely to be closed and another 60 improved by minor works, leaving about 50 to be replaced or substantially improved in major building programmes. Of the latter, two will be replaced in the 1971–72 programme and three or four in the 1972–73 programme. To complete the process by the 1977–78 programme would require the inclusion of eight or nine projects in each programme after 1972–73 at an approximate annual cost of£500,000. The local education authority itself has proposed the replacement of five old primary schools in the 1973–74 programme.
