HC Deb 08 March 1971 vol 813 cc48-9W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the minimum area of teaching floorspace per pupil allowed by her regulations for new secondary schools; and on what basis is this area calculated.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The minimum teaching area per pupil depends on the total number and age range of the pupils for whom the school provides, as shown in the table below.

the difference in building cost, for equivalent teaching area, between new secondary schools at tender stage in London, and the equivalent average for England and Wales as a whole.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The most reliable basis of comparison is the cost per square foot for extension projects excluding costs attributable to such items as external works, site difficulties, fees, furniture and equipment. For the two years 1969 and 1970 average costs for such projects were: London£5.64 per square foot; England and Wales£5.54 per square foot.
