HC Deb 08 February 1971 vol 811 cc66-7W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps she has taken to draw the attention of schoolchildren to the health hazards involved in smoking tobacco.

Mrs. Thatcher

Advice on this subject is contained in the Department's "Handbook of Health Education". A pamphlet on smoking, which will take account of the latest report by the Royal College of Physicians, will be published shortly.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will issue a circular to local education authorities advising them to prevent the smoking of tobacco by teachers on school premises.

Mrs. Thatcher

No. I am sure that local education authorities and teachers are aware of the problem without a circular from me. I certainly hope that teachers, and all other adults in close touch with young people, will bear in mind the influence that their example may have.
