§ Mr. J. H. Osbornasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many Departments of computer technology, science or mathematics, suitably equipped with computers, have now been set up in universities, polytechnics, or places of higher education; and if she will state the equivalent number of full-time students for whom courses are provided.
§ Mr. van StraubenzeeAll universities have large central computers provided for use by every department and all offer courses in science and mathematics. In 1969–70 54,000 full-time students were taking science and mathematics (including computer science) courses. In the

§ Mr. J. H. Osbornasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT those Departments in universities, polytechnics, or places of higher learning which are now equipped with computers and running courses in computer technology, science, or mathematics, indicating the make and size of computer in use, capital cost of equipment, equivalent number of full time student places, number of staff, type of course and annual running cost, respectively, and in total.
§ Mr. van StraubenzeeThe latest available information about universities is contained in Volume 6 of Statistics of Education, 1968, and the Reports of the Computer Board for Universities and Research Councils (Cmnd. 4006 and Cmnd. 4448).
Following is the information available for 1969–70 about the polytechnics and other further education establishments with computer installations. Information on staff and running costs is not collected. Varying use to suit local needs is also made of the computers for other courses —e.g., in management studies, business and social studies, and engineering—for staff research and other college uses, and for schools.
