HC Deb 08 February 1971 vol 811 c57W
Mr. John Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers are currently unemployed in Scotland; what percentage of the total has been unemployed for more than three months; and what percentage this number of unemployed school leavers represents of all school leavers last year.

Mr. Dudley Smith

On 11th January 2,282 school leavers were registered as unemployed in Scotland, representing approximately 3.9 per cent. of the young people who left school for employment last year. Statistics which show the duration of unemployment do not distinguish between school leavers and other young people and separate figures for school leavers in Scotland could not be obtained without disproportionate expense.

Mr. John Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers are currently unemployed in the county of Lanarkshire; what percentage of the total has been unemployed for more than three months; and what percentage the number of unemployed school leavers represents of all school leavers last year.

Mr. Dudley Smith

On 11th January 683 school leavers were registered as unemployed in the County of Lanarkshire and, of these, 41, or 6 per cent., had been unemployed for more than three months. The total figure of unemployed school leavers represented approximately 8.5 per cent. of the young people who left school for employment last year.
