§ Mr. J. H. Osbornasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the value of sponsored or contract research placed in 1969–70 with each research association for which he is responsible by industry, and other outside agencies, respectively, and in total expressed as percentage of all income; and how this compares with each of the five previous years.
§ Sir J. EdenThe precise information required is not available, since the returns made to the Department of Trade and Industry cover all kinds of repayment work, including in addition to individually sponsored research, testing, advisory work and training courses. However, the total value of such work carried out by the Research Associations now receiving grant from D.T.I. was £799,516—of which £664,732 was from United Kingdom industry and £134,784 from other non-28W Government organisations—in 1964 and £1,944,394—of which £1,726,133 was from United Kingdom industry and £218,261 from other non-Government organisations—in 1969. These totals represent 8.7 per cent. and 13.5 per cent. of the total gross incomes of all the D.T.I. Research Associations in 1964 and 1969 respectively. In 1969 the value of repayment work of this kind exceeded 10 per cent. of a Research Association's total income in eleven cases.
