Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what proposals he has to extend special development area benefits to an area such as Mid-Wales, in uniformity with the announcement made by the Secretary of State for Scotland in respect of Western Scotland.

Mr. Brynmor John

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what proposals he has for extending special development area status to appropriate rural areas in Wales.

In its review of regional policy, the Government are considering the circumstances of all areas and what status is appropriate to them. Statements will be made as soon as possible.
