§ 121. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) whether he is aware of the difficult problems regarding housing confronting the London Borough of Newham connected with war damage, loss of rateable income, shortage of land and the high price where available, the high rates, the expense of serving debts at high rates of bank interest and slum clearance scheme and related problems; and whether he will consider giving this council some special and preferential assistance in overcoming these and associated problems;
(2) when he last visited the London Borough of Newham in his official capacity; when he expects to make his next visit; and, on this occasion, whether he will discuss with council representatives various problems confronting that council connected with rate poundage, interest rates, the cost of land, the Ronan Point disaster, slum clearance problems resulting from the war, and the possibility of special help for the authority.
§ Mr. AmeryMy right hon. Friend has not yet visited Newham but he is aware of the difficulties facing the Council and also of their good record in housing. My officials are constantly in touch with the council's officers and my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State has offered to meet members to discuss any points outstanding from the officers' discussion.
