HC Deb 29 May 1970 vol 801 c656W
Mr. Emery

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of the gross national product was taken in taxation in the years 1951, 1964, 1968, and for that portion of 1969 for which figures are available, breaking this down, in each year, into figures for central Government direct taxation, central Government indirect taxation, central Government taxes on capital, national insurance, etc., contributions, and local authority rates.

Mr. Taverne:

For the figures for years 1951 and 1964 I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Guildford (Mr. David Howell) on 26th March, 1970. The statistics necessary for calculating the figures for the years 1968 and 1969 are to be found in the White Paper "Preliminary Estimates of National Income and Balance of Payments 1964–69" (Cmnd. 4328) and in Financial Statistics.—[Vol. 798, cols. 501–2.]
