HC Deb 28 May 1970 vol 801 c529W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware of the growing number of innocent persons being remanded in custody for periods of over three months who when subsequently coming to trial and being proved innocent have no remedy in law for their loss of liberty; and whether he will take steps to ensure that no person shall be remanded in custody for a period longer than three months.

Mr. Elystan Morgan:

My right hon. Friend is not aware of such an increase, and sees no need to strengthen the safeguards afforded by the existing law.
