asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, if he will estimate the average number of prisoners in Her Majesty's prisons during 1970–71, together with the average total cost per week of maintaining a prisoner in prison; and if he will break down the latter figure to show the average cost per week for different types of prisoners such as Borstal prisoners.

The population of prison service establishments in England and Wales on 15th May was 39,552. For the year ended 31st March, 1969, the average weekly maintenance cost, excluding capital expenditure and building maintenance, was £21 18s. 6d. per inmate for all establishments and as follows for different types of establishment:
